Which career path should I choose?

Are you having concerns about whether or not your chosen career path will lead to a job when the time comes? If you have concerns, you’re not alone. A Strada-Gallup poll conducted in 2017, said that only one-third of the 32,500 students in the survey believed that they would have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to be successful in the job market or even in the work environment when they finished school. Wow! And, as you might expect, most of the less-confident students are liberal arts majors. Is that surprising? Maybe not, because we all know that technology is becoming more and more prevalent in many careers.

Another finding that is a little surprising: Students’ confidence in their college preparation diminished slightly between their freshman and senior years! A few in all fields seem to start to second-guess their choices. But here’s the good news: There are some things you can do to improve your odds and your beliefs about your own ability. Frequently talk to your teachers and professors about the job market; they know what’s happening out there. Use your career center for help—that’s what they’re there for. Get involved in your community with anything that’s career related, even if it’s only for an hour a week. You’ll learn a lot and even make some new friends and mentors. Take charge!
