A shipfitter basically puts metal components where they need to be in order to build a ship. They cut and weld metal pieces together in order to build the structure of the ship.
How Do I Become A Shipfitter?
Completing a trade school program or a two-year college program in welding technology is likely required to obtain this position. Some larger organizations provide their own training programs to teach welding to new employees.

What Is The Work Environment For A Shipfitter?
A shipfitter will likely work in a very hot, sometimes uncomfortable environment. At times, welding in very tight spaces may be necessary. Being in good physical condition is definitely a plus…so don’t cancel that gym membership!
What Is The Future Outlook For A Shipfitter?
Demand for these positions will be dependent upon geographic location. Areas with shipbuilding organizations will obviously have greater opportunities for this position….but you already know that, don’t you! 🙂
