Pre-Professional Biology (BS)

What is A Pre-Professional Biology (BS) Degree?

Biology is the scientific study of life in all forms including plants, animals, and microorganisms.   A Bachelor’s degree in biology can be a good spring-board to a number of careers in allied health, and the BS degree can prepare you to be a research assistant, a technician in forensics, toxicology, ecology, or pharmacology, or a Biology teacher in middle or high school. Many people who major in Biology go on to earn a graduate degree so that they’ll have more options in higher-level positions.

Some colleges and universities offer the BS degree in Pre-Professional Biology, a program that may include an intense preparation in the biological and physical sciences during the first two semesters of work while spreading general education requirements throughout the 4 years of study. In this way students in the last years of the program will be ready to take higher level courses in the sciences, preparing them to be more competitive when applying to graduate programs in medicine, dentistry, or veterinary medicine. To develop an understanding of the latest advances in the biological sciences, it’s important for students to have a solid foundation in chemistry and physics, which is the reason for starting that preparation early in the program.  Students will be well prepared for graduate studies and may also be ready for position in high school teaching, laboratory research, or the biomedical industry.

The video below discusses a “typical” program, so it should help regardless of which school you are considering.
