Biology, Coastal Zone Studies (MS)

What is A Biology, Coastal Zone Studies (MS) Degree?

Biology is the scientific study of life in all forms including plants, animals, and microorganisms. Coastal Zone specialists look at coastlines, estuaries, wetlands, and other near-coast environments. They study plants and animals that may be adversely affected by changing weather and climate conditions or other adverse conditions like over-building, in order to ensure their sustainability. To complete an MS in Biology with a concentration in Coastal Zone Studies you will first need to have a BS in Biology or a closely related field.

Master’s work in the field will include advanced biology courses in ecology, ecological/environmental sampling techniques, experimental research design and statistical analysis, and numerous lab experiences in which water conditions will be tested. You may be able to choose between programs with or without a thesis.  The with-thesis program is designed to prepare you to go into teaching and research while the no-thesis program is designed more for students who would like to go directly into a career job after graduation. Even though both types of programs will involve lots of lab and field experiences, the no-thesis option will have even more hands-on experience than the thesis track.

The video below discusses a “typical” program, so it should help regardless of which school you are considering.
