What is A Environmental Engineering (BS) Degree?

People in the engineering field use science and math to solve problems. These engineers figure out how to take what environmental scientists have learned in order to develop solutions to environmental problems.  So, what’s environmental science?  It’s a multi-disciplinary approach that studies the environment—that is, everything in the world around us—and the relationship between that world and the organisms in it.  It’s a branch of biology that uses chemistry, physics, ecology, and other sciences to explain the impacts of living things on the environment, like in the recent focus on man-made global warming.  Putting all that together, the environmental engineer uses engineering skills and the findings of environmental scientists to devise solutions to the problems caused by things like acid rain, climate change, car emissions, sound pollution, and ozone depletion issues.

A BS degree program in Environmental Engineering will involve all the usual courses toward any degree in engineering like math, chemistry, physics, statistical methods, while also taking fundamental courses in the environment and its interactions with people. Employment opportunities in this field are predicted to rise at a much higher rate in the future than the average in other career areas.
