What is A Microbiology (BS) Degree?

Microbiology is the study of all living organisms that are too small to be seen with the naked eye, known as microbes.  Microbiology research has done a lot for the world to develop drugs, wipe out epidemics, create bio-fuels, make our foods safe, and even help with pollution.  To earn a BS degree in Microbiology you’ll take lots of lab courses and classroom work in subjects like inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, medical microbiology or environmental microbiology, microbial ecology, developmental molecular biology, and genetics.

You may choose a certain track or concentration in the field, and many micro students also choose to earn another Bachelor’s degree—like in psychology, chemistry, or environmental studies—while earning the BS in Microbiology. You may have a chance to do an internship in the field or to work with faculty members on their research projects.  With this degree you’ll be prepared to be a research assistant, lab manager, or technical writer, among other positions. You may decide to pursue graduate degree work.  Microbiology is a good undergraduate major if you’re interested in medical, dental, or optometry school.
