Library Science (BS)

What is A Library Science (BS) Degree?

Library Science has to do with the collecting, organizing, and preserving of books and other materials in libraries.  In most geographical locations you’ll need to have a Master’s degree (called an MA, MS, MLS, or MLIS) to work as a professional Librarian at a public library or school.  The BS in Library Science degree will prepare you to work in the field as a library assistant or technician, in a specialized private library overseeing a technical aspect of a private collection, or managing a particular function based on special knowledge and skills that you have in addition to library science.

In working toward this Bachelor’s degree you’ll study things like how to organize materials according to various classifications and data management programs, how to access information using search strategies/search engines for different databases, and how to evaluate retrieved information on whether or not it’s suitable for the intended purpose.  Courses will range from information policy to cost-benefit analysis of searches to ethical and legal issues with information acquisition.  You’ll get a lot of hands-on experience working with all different kinds of collections within this program.
